Cobras

Project image

Cobras is a trick-taking game for 1-5 players (from our friends at Cardboard Edison!) where knowing when to win a trick is key to winning. Players must lose tricks to collect cobras, then win a trick to exchange them for points. Timing things just right is the game’s core challenge, and if you push your luck too far, you might get bit!

Each trick, the losing players divvy up the cobras shown on the cards played that trick and place cobra tokens on their basket. The winning player empties their basket for points, according to a scale that rewards more points for more cobras-then drops off steeply if you’ve pushed your luck too far!

Cobras is for 1-5 players and is available on Kickstarter now for just $16 (US)!

“Don’t separate what you like as a player and what you’re making. Bring your robust personal tastes into your design to guide you.” – Grant Rodiek

“When designing, start by aiming for perfect balance, but tastefully depart from it. Concede ground to benefit the game’s core experience.” – Coalition Game Studios

“Get to that first playtest. You may have a great idea, but there is a monumental gap between an idea and an actual game.” – Jamey Stegmaier
“A key tool in developing a mature design is addressing those lingering feelings you have as a player. Isolate and fix those 1% kinks.”- Grant Rodiek

“You’ll make a game and think you’ve nailed it the first time you write the rules. Then comes the real work, which can be exhausting, discouraging, confusing. But if you believe in your game, don’t be dismayed. Get it in front of people. Playtest it. Toss out what isn’t working, explore new ideas. Make something you love playing, and then enjoy what follows.” – David Somerville
“Design pitch tip: ‘I’ve spent X years developing this game’ is a red flag sentence for many reasons. It doesn’t help your pitch.” – Nate Murray

“Do a lot of playtesting and simulation of plays on your own, before you reach out for possible playtesters: You need to keep them interested in the game, so you should have sorted out all the basics: does it work the way you expected, are there snowball effects, is there something that is too redundant?” – Helge Ostertag
