Hands in the Sea

Project image

Hands in the Sea is a two-player deck building card driven war game set during the First Punic War between Rome and Carthage from 264-241 BC. Each player uses their deck of cards to perform up to two actions per round. Actions range from colonization to naval movement, to battle, with most activity centered in Sicily, Sardinia, and Corsica. Players may also purchase additional cards to bolster their decks and provide them with more choices. There are also Strategy cards that players can purchase to give them additional advantages.

Inspired by A Few Acres of Snow, this game features several new elements, including navies and naval battles, cavalry superiority, mercenaries, field battles, sieges, manpower, strategy cards, random events, turn based scoring, bribery and tactical bonuses. The name of the game is based on a quote from a Carthaginian commander, who claimed at the outbreak of hostilities that the Carthaginian control of the seas was such that the Romans would not even dare wash their hands in the sea.

The updated 2.0 version of Hands in the Sea is funding on Kickstarter now. You can reserve your copy for just $50.

Argent: The Consortium

Project image

Welcome to Argent University, the premiere magical institution in the World of Indines! The previous University Chancellor has announced his resignation, and the race is on to fill the empty seat. Espionage and Bribery are the classic tools, but you also have powerful magic spells, artifacts looted from the university’s vaults, and your student aides to do your bidding.

Argent was published in 2015, and became a favorite among gamers for its hybrid of American and Euro-style play. Though you have a variety of powers at your disposal, turns are tight and every choice matters. Figuring out the best course of action is always difficult, and players must use all sorts of tricks and diplomacy in order to get the upper hand.

Argent is not your typical worker-placement game. Mages wield powers to hinder and displace one another. Players cast spells to interfere with opponents and upend expectations. Treasures provide aggressive and defensive tools, and supporters can quickly shift the balance of power in any direction. Even the conditions for victory are uncertain-until you are able to spy on the Consortium and learn them!

The updated second edition of Argent is available on Kickstarter now from Level 99 games. Get your copy for just $60!

“Look at your theme, really look at it. What is it made of, what does it do, how does it do it, why, when, where? All of it. Take it apart and really look at what you have. Stop trying to make a ‘game’ when you can make an experience, something the players will talk about and feel like they were involved.” – Benny Sperling
